3. Mysterious Shetani carved by Mathias Nampoka

Mathias Nampoka (1971~) is a son of Evarist Nampoka. He has been carving only Shetani just like his father. He says that once he faces the African Blackwood that he is about to use, he sees the appearance of Shetani that should be there and he expresses the image with thin, stretchy and beautiful curves.

Evarist Nampoka (1944-2000) was born in Mozambique. He belongs to the Makonde. He started wood sculpting after moving to Dar es Salaam. He believed "We are the creations of God, but Shetani is the creations of my own imagination" and he only prouduced the Shetani sculptures. His works are all so mysterious and it is even hard to tell which parts are what.
