5. The Tingatinga School of painting

  
Edward Saidi Tingatinga began painting in Dares salaam in 1960's. He is a Makua people who are found in southern Tanzania. 
He started painting on a cheap square building board with  enamel paint.After his death, his direct 6 followers inherited his technique. Today, there are many artists creating colorful drawings of  the nature and lives of people and sell their works at the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society.




Omari Amonde (1940-2015) was born in Southern Tanzania. 
He is a cousin of Edward Saidi Tingatinga and the very last direct follower. He had been Chairman of the Tingatinga Arts Cooperative Society. His drawing has a large animal centered on the picture which derived from his teacher, Tingatinga.

Mohamed Charinda (1947-) is the oldest artist of the Tingatinga school of painting. He is from the same village as Tingatinga. He draws animals or Shetani in his dreams with very calm colors. He is also known for drawing their life style with strong messages. He draws various scenes of his home village. Tanzanian folktale collection with his drawings used as a illustration is published in Japan.

Jaffary Aussi (1960~2008) was born in Dar es Salaam. His father is a cousin of Tingatinga and Omari Amonde is his uncle. Drawings of animals, especially birds, are well known. Colorful gradients are seen in the background. Solo-exhibition was held in Tokyo in 1987.
